I actually take the opposite approach to the desktop on my mobile device. Instead of having icons to launch applications, I have the desktop display all relevant information to me (meetings, emails, text messages, etc.). This way as soon as I turn on the device all the information I’m interested in is there at a glance without having to load an app. If a particular app is desired than that is chosen from a menu.
